Capture the Connecting Moments

It has been close to two years since COVID-19 struck the world. All throughout these trying times, Singapore has enforced several lockdowns to curb the spread of the virus. Singaporeans of all generations have played a part in keeping our community safe by staying home, inevitably losing out on spending precious time with their families and friends.

In our increasingly isolated world today, Playpoint sees the importance of connections in a community, and will continue their efforts in building play areas that provide a safe space to encourage communal interaction in our urban cityscape.

This year, for our photography competition, Capture the Connecting Moments, we seek to honour the connections between Singaporeans from all walks of life. We hope to see precious interactions in the community through your eyes, and encourage you to share photographs depicting moments of connection at play areas that we’ve brought to life.

There are many ways to visualise connection, such as children playing together, or parents fondly watching over their children whilst catching up with their neighbours. We leave it up to your imagination, and eagerly await the different interpretations that are sure to come our way!

Judges Profile

Mr Jeffrey Wong

With a distinctive set of fine art architectural photos, Mr Jeffrey Wong is a recipient of the Fellowship of The Photographic Society of Singapore (PSS) and has won domestic and international awards for his photography. Currently an instructor at PSS, Mr Wong opines that the key to capturing the unique moment lies within the execution of the decisive moment, complemented by the artistic eye of the photographer to tell a story that depicts the subjects and their emotions with just one frame. Believing that even the most nicely executed photo doesn’t compare to one with a story behind it, his conviction is what leads him to prioritise the story of his photography first.

With his background in Landscape Architecture, Dr Lin’s photography gravitates towards landscape-focused scenes. Mr Chow Chee Yong

Mr Chow Chee Yong is currently a Senior Lecturer at Beyon Design Centre and Temasek Polytechnic, but also a worldly figure in the
photography scene. He graduated with a BFA (Honours) in Photography in 1994 from Western Michigan University and received the JCCI Art Scholarship in 1998 which led him to Musashino Art University where he obtained his MA (Distinction) in Photography.

He has since enjoyed an illustrious career, having participated in more than 40 exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world, and
having his works featured in publications such as Nippon Camera, Asahi Camera & Photographs by the Next Generation: Young Portfolio
(Japan), Resonance – Songs of our Forefathers (Singapore), among many others. He was also featured in Channel News Asia’s Primetime
program – Asia Exposed in 2010 and was the first and only Singaporean among 15 photographers from around the globe to be recognised and incepted as one of “2011 Loweprofessionals”.

Through the dreamlike surrealistic nature of this series, he seeks to capture the attention of the viewers to provoke further thoughts about the space with walls that seemed to tell a story of its own beyond the photograph, challenging them to re-interpret and bring the spaces to live in their minds. Just as there are spaces which are private and public, some of the images are intentionally contemplative and quiet.
Some inviting imaginative reflections, others, just surreal inventions.
